Bapala Creative Arts and Services is recently registered primary cooperative which operates from the Riverside Youth Centre, in Phuthaditjhaba, Free State, South Africa. The primary purpose of the cooperative is to promote and develop arts and culture in Phuthaditjhaba and the broader community of Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality (previously known as Qwaqwa, and herein referred to as “the community”). The cooperative grew from recognition of the vulnerabilities and challenges young people in the historically disadvantaged community faced, and the need for activities through which they could unite and channel their energies towards projects that contribute to their own positive development, and the development of arts and culture at the community level.
Registration of the cooperative in 2017 formalized many years of Bapala’s members (detailed below) working together informally, to promote arts and culture in the community. It is a significant achievement, which positions the cooperative to extend its activities, and broaden its reach in the community. This will in turn contribute to Bapala Creative Arts and Services fulfilling its overarching aims and objectives.
